Travel to Sri Lanka may take a little planning. The island’s superb beaches all lie along its magical coastline to the south and southwest, with sandy covers and estuaries and long palm fringed stretches. Beaches vary in character and facilities so you have a wide choice. There are upscale resorts such as the colonial Mount Lavinia or the modern Bentota or Beruwela. Further south are the picturesque and quieter beaches at Unawatuna or Mirissa. For those who like watersports and marine life, there is the popular Negomno, on a sheltered lagoon and conveniently close to the international airport, or crowded activity beaches, notably Hikaduwa. By contrast, Nilaveli, near Trincomalee and the largely deserted Arugam Bay (when accessible) with clear waters and good surfing and diving, offer modest accommodations away on the east coast.

If you travel to Sri Lanka, don’t forget, that near the southern tip of the island, the Dutch colonial inheritance is best preserved in the coastal fort at Galle, while there are makers carrying on an ancient Sinhalese tradition further north at Ambalangoda.

But many of Sri Lanka’s most beautiful and interesting sights are away from the coast. By venturing a short distance you can explore the richness of the island’s cultural heritage. You need only make a couple of short trips and spend a few nights away from your resort hotel to see the Central Highlands, with the last Buddhist capital of Kandy, accessible even on a day trip from Colombo. To the north are the other two points of cultural triangle – the ancient capitals of Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa – and the extraordinary royal citadel atop the giant rocky outcrop of Sigiriya, decorated with its world famous frescoes. Close to Anuradhapura is Mihintal where the first royal conversion to Buddhism was inspired, while Dambulla has impressive paintings in its rock cave.

Travel to Sri Lanka should include

A visit to Kandy, where you can also see baby elephants at bath time at the Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage. Nearby, are interesting spice plantations and several temples which preserve the late flowering of the Kandyan School of paintings as well as craft villages producing fascinating metalwork, carving, pottery and weaving.

The central mountains with spectacular waterfalls and attractive walking trails around Nuware Eliya, surrounded by tea gardens, provide a refreshing break. And while the gemstones of Ratnapura will lure some travelers, others will be attracted by the natural wonders of Sinharaja nearby or the wildlife at Ruhuna-Yale National Park to the southeast with plenty of bird watching along several shallow coastal lagoons.

As you can see if you travel to Sri Lanka, despites its small scale, there are several spectacular sites to see and many things to do. Not to mention, the friendly and warm people. You will be glad you decided to travel to Sri Lanka.

Note: Poya holidays are observed on the day of each full moon. If you travel to Sri Lanka, you will discover that Hindu and Buddhist festivals are determined according to local astronomical observations and it is often only possible to forecast the approximate time of their occurrence.

During the lunar month of Ramadan that precedes Eid al-Fitr, Muslims fast during the day and feast at night and normal business patterns may be interrupted; however, since Sri Lanka is not a predominantly Muslim country restrictions (which travellers may experience elsewhere) are unlikely to cause problems.

What comes to mind when thinking of Sri Lanka?

In the eighteenth century an English writer coined the word ‘serendipity’ from Serendib, the old Arab seafarers’ name for the country now known as Sri Lanka. Serendipity is ‘the faculty of making happy discoveries by chance, thereby encouraging a soothing state of mind’—an apt description for the continual surprises lying wait round every corner of this topsy turvy, eccentric, yet surprisingly relaxing island.

Should you travel to Sri Lanka?

You ask yourself. Well, I will ask you, do you know this wonderful island? Sri Lanka is rich in variety of culture, vegetation, climate, language, architecture and religion. Of course, you should travel to Sri Lanka.

When I think of Sri Lanka the first thing that comes to mind is warm and friendly people. Another phrase that pops out at me is tropical paradise, and I must confess, when it comes to travel to Sri Lanka both are very true. Despite Sri Lanka’s troubles in the past, the people are still extremely friendly, and it is still a tropical paradise.

For foreign visitors, by a quirk of the world’s economy, many things in Sri Lanka are impossibly inexpensive. In fact, many things are actually cheaper than it was 20 years ago. I am not saying Sri Lanka is a place for a cheap holiday. It isn’t. In 2011, a rice and curry lunch could still be hand for the equivalent for a US $2. And it is still possible to find a room in a guesthouse in the interior for the equivalent of around $10 a night. While some hotel rates remain low, room rates for FITs (fully independent tourist) are souring: at the higher price level (such as in Sri Lanka’s new and trendy boutique hotels) a room will cost over US $200 with the addition of 10% service charge and a further 17% in taxes. So my advice is to regard travel to Sri Lanka, not as a low budget destination, rather as a country where a holiday can bring unexpected bonuses.

The slogan chosen by the tourist board to promote Sri Lanka as a destination as to appeal to all visitors is, ‘Sri Lanka: a land like no other’. It is apt. The slogan is obviously chosen intended to present Sri Lanka as a travel destination that would suit everyone. It is! If you desire to travel to Sri Lanka, whatever you seek in Sri Lanka as a holiday destination can be found there. This site will attempt to share with you some of the wonders of Sri Lanka and guide you to places of good value. I think that if you want to travel to Sri Lanka, this site will serve you well.

Yes you should travel to Sri Lanka!
